Now that you have found the frame that fits your game it’s time to choose the strings.  These are as important as the frame itself as they will be the only thing actually touching the ball during play.  The question begs.  How do you go about choosing your string?  Some points to remember are the type of string, tension and gauge of the string. 

In the market today you need to know that there are 2 main types of strings available.  Syntetic Gut and Natural Gut.  They both have their good and bad properties.  While one will promote spin, the other may provide more comfort and feel.  The following will hopefully help you understand more about what you should be using.

Natural Gut is made out of cow intestine and it is an expensive process.  For many years, professionals chose this string for its unmatched feel and ability to hold tension.  It is also recommended for players with arm problems because it is the softest string in the marketplace.

Sythetic gut is the most popular of the lines so we will start here.  Over the years manufactures have made strings to help in the performance of players while trying to improve durability and keep the cost down.  Synthetic strings come in many different ways.  

Nylon synthetics have a core string that is wrapped with other thinner strings.  They fell crisper than gut and other syntethtics and it is harder on the arm.  They hold tension well and are fairly durable. 

Mulitfilaiments strings are next in line.  They have many fibers for a core and then are wrapped with different outer fibers.  These strings feel closest to natural gut.  Multis are for the most part easy on the arm.  They lose tension and break quicker than other strings.  But also, offer the control and power many players are looking for.

Polyesters and Kevlars are the last segment in this grouping.  Kevlars are the harshest to the arm.  They are very stiff and very durable.  They maintain tension reasonably well.   They are made for ”string breakers” or hard hitters.  These strings work best when installed in the mains and “hybrid” with a softer synthetic.  In recent years, polyester has become the string of choice by many professionals because of the  playability factors associated with bigger hitters.

Tension is another factor you have to consider.  It is easy to remember that higher tension will give you more control while lower will give you more power.  Higher tension will also present a crisper harder feel while reducing the sweet spot.  Lower tension will enlarge the sweetspot and give you a softer feel. 

Gauge of the string also effects the ball flight and power you will recieve.  The thinner the gauge the more spin and power you will get.  They also have more elasticity for a more comfortable softer feel.  One drawback is that will break quicker.  The thicker gauged strings will give you durability and less spin.

So this year you are thinking of getting new irons or maybe that new driver that you’ve had your eye on.  STOP!!! Before you buy anything you must make sure that your equipment fits you properly in order for it to deliver that desirable and repeatable ball flight performance of what you wish for. 

Some golfers question if they need to be fit or not.  All golfers should be fit. Beginners need to be for the simple reason that they may develop bad habits or tendencies that come will ill fitting equipment.  Remember, if you are beginning golf  and your swing is still improving through lessons you can have the clubs altered to your new swing by bending.  The more experienced golfer needs to be in order to better their game and improve their accuracy and distance control. 

With many online store options, it’s easy to point and click on what you think you may need.  Some even provide you with an area for “static fitting”  which makes you think you are getting the right fit.  However, this static fitting is just what is says, static.  This means that you take some measurements while standing at attention and guesstimate some things that you think you want out of your golf game.  While this at least gets you moving, this is only 1 step of a 2 step process.  Dynamic fitting is the other half of the equation. 

With Dynamic fitting you need a trained individual that has experience in properly fitting clubs to that persons specific needs in the golf swing.  This doesn’t mean just slapping some tap on the club and hitting.  It involves the grip, set up and posture, swing tempo, swing speed and tendencies of  the golfer being fit.  Only after these things are achieved then the golfer needs to have a variety of clubs and various lengths in order to confirm that they are going to get the most out of their game.  A trained fitter will finally make sure that the shaft is proper for you and then do the lie angle part of the fitting.  This will instill a confidence in your game that you know when you are standing over that next shot that you have the tools needed to accomplish the shot.

Costs of fitting???? Well the range can vary.  Generally, a set of irons will cost $100.00 to $300.00.  Driver fittings are $50.00 to $250.00.  Here at Drilling we charge $100.00 for the irons and $50.00 for the driver.  If you purchase here we apply that fitting cost towards the costs of the clubs essentially making the fitting FREE!!!!
